Why RealID forum changes suck
Miss Medicina has an interesting post up on the upcoming forum changes on Blizzards RealID. I´m in a similar predicament since I don’t want my name associated with my hobby when someone googles my name. I want my name to be associated with my professional work on the internet.
I happen to come from a rather small country in Europe ( less than 500.000 people ) and on top of that I live in Sweden. Living in Sweden with a foreign name sticks out like a turd in a punch bowl. If I Google my name and do a search on my name in Sweden’s most prominent search engine when it comes down to telephone numbers and addresses, the top result is my name along with my telephone number and address. That is one problem I have with the RealID forum changes.
Another problem is the consequences of people googling my name getting lots of WoW references. I must admit that I haven’t been that active on the WoW forums, but thats because I’m on the EU forums and don’t get a chance to weigh in on discussions the developers are reading, anyway that is a topic for a separate post. The point is that I don’t want potential employers to get WoW references when they google me. I want them to see my work when they google me.
I was fine with RealID until they announced the forum changes. I will only be making realID contacts with people I know pretty well in-game or IRL friends. These forum changes will probably discourage me from posting anything on the forums. Blizzard might be able to block search spiders to crawl their forums, but thats like putting a band-aid on a gunshot wound.
